There are many things to see and do in Malacca. There is the older heritage part of the city where European architecture are still very much in prominence. The old palace is still standing and most pre-war buildings are also there. One could easily spot them via their porcelain tiles and painted plaster reliefs. Other main attractions here include the Christ Church, which was built in the mid 1700s where the bricks used to enact the building was imported from Netherlands and Zeeland. There are also some old Dutch tombstones on the church floor as well. The Stadthuys is perhaps one of the most visited landmark here built way back in 1660 which functions as the historical museum. The A Famosa gate, otherwise known as the Porta de Santiago is the remains of the fortress that used to be here as protection by the Portuguese. Located along Jalan Kota, a short walk away uphill is St Paul’s Church. Built by the Portuguese in 1521, it was previously known as teh Nossa Senhora da Annuciada. The Red Square comprises around Stadthuys and Christ Church that holds the Tang Beng Swee Clock Tower right in the middle. Museums are abundant in aroudn here, the Baba and Nyonya Peranakan Museum is open daily except Tuesdays costing RM8 per entry while Muzium Budaya is located at the foot of the hill made based on the old royal palace. The Cheng Hoon Teng Temple is the oldest Chinese temple in the country located at Jalan Tokong while one can also head out to the Portuguese Settlement in around the southeastern section of the city. The Hang Li Po Well is also a popular destination which pretty marks the Chinese settlement here during that era. The Poh San Teng Temple is situated around the foot of Bukit China beside the well. St John’s Hill and Fort is another fortress. It is in along the southern part and provides great sightseeing. Apart from shopping at the normal shopping centers which can be found in the city center, one should visit Jonker Street and its surrounding areas, where a variety of handicrafts, antiques and novelties can be found at an affordable price. These shops tend to be closed on Tuesdays though. |
