To say the least, Malacca apart from its heritage and historical traits, its culture play a huge influence in the people here. As such, it is just normal that food becomes a unique attraction here.

One would be able to savour most of Malaysian food here although there would always be a few local delicacies which fall under the category of ‘must-try’. To begin with, the Peranakan food which is essentially a Baba-Nyonya cuisine had since been on the rise lately. One should sample the ayam buah keluak and the ayam pongteh. The Nyonya Cendol is also a common order as they are slightly differently made compared to the normal Cendol found in other parts of the county. Made using the Malaccan Brown Sugar, it is said to be a bit more aromatic compared to those produced using the normal brown sugar.

The Chicken Rice Ball is also a common favourite among Malaysians. Originated from Malacca, the typically Hainanese Chicken Rice is said to have been originated from the Hainanese who migrated here. The difference here is that while the chicken is cooked the usual Hainanese style, the rice comes in small ping-pong sized balls, it is an unusual experience for anyone to try. There are many such restaurants available although not all might taste the same and as good.

The Satay Celup also a local Malaccan favourite is another must try. Typically a steamboat styled cuisine and very much like the ‘lok-lok’ found in along streets everywhere, one would dip the satay styled fish balls, chicken meat, fried tofu, crabsticks and other seafood into hot boiling peanut satay sauce. The locals would always love the celup with chili sauce which might not go so well with tourists but it would be an unforgettable experience.

Over in Malacca one could also try the Portuguese-Eurasian dishes found in around the Portuguese Settlement where seafood make up most of the menu served with very spicy curry. This would essentially be a menu made especially for the spicy lovers and might take a while to get used to.
