To say the least, Negeri Sembilan is renowned for its food as it has a long heritage of Minangkabau traits. Most of the food used mostly different types of herbs, roots, ginger, garlic and coconut milk. There are no less than 900 restaurants located in around the cities of Seremban and Port Dickson. One should try out food like Lomang or otherwise known as the Lemang. Using glutinous rice, it is cooked in long bamboo sticks and is found along the roadsides and expressways. This dish is a familiar choice among the people in the country and is always sought after due to its authentic aromatic taste. The Gulai Kuning, is usually made using coconut milk, some herbs and spices with lemon grass and is a gravy-based dish that uses chicken or beef typically. The Masak Lemak Lada Api is one of the spiciest dishes around. This is one of the most authentic dish from the state, which usually use beef, catfish and chicken cooked with lemon grass, union, turmeric and chilies served with white rice. The Ghondang is beef or chicken shimmered with spcies, coconut milk and herbs usually eaten with lomang/lemang. The Penganan and Kesirat are typically desserts that are served mostly during the Hari Raya festivals. Penganan is made using glutinous rice flour while the Kesirat uses a mixture of glutinous rice and course rice flour. One should also try out the Air Jando Pulang, typically a drink famous and made from young coconut, rich pulp and sugar. The Sambal tempoyak Daun Kayu is a combination of various leaves and plants, originally using 40 types but has since evolved to using less than that due to the scarcity of certain types of species like Pucuk Lidah Kerbau, Sulur Keladi Birah, Pucuk Tetek, Pucuk Pelanduk and Pucuk Sekentut. In Seremban, there is the infamous Seremban Siew Pow. This is typically deep fried biscuit styled engulfing pork usually. This is a famous snack used to eat with coffee and tea and is a common favourite among the Chinese as it is a non-halal dish. It is so famous that there people from all over the country comes to Seremban to savour these biscuits. Other type of dishes here include the sambal belimbing which are star fruit sambal, the Kerabu, the sambal tempoyak which is typically fermented durian sambal, the telur itik masak lemak cili padi, which are duck egg cooked with coconut milk and hot chilies and the keladi asam pedas which are hot and sour yums. |
